Wir recyceln

We recycle

This means we make use of every opportunity to recycle during the production process. We also use recycled granules to produce new products, such as our block racks.

Environmental projects

We initiate environmental projects

With a variety of nature restoration projects, we ensure biodiversity, conservation as well as the conversion of CO2 into oxygen.

The world, and thus also our global community, are on the cusp of a major change. Climate change will undoubtedly continue to be a factor in the future and impact our day-to-day lives in a variety of ways. As a result, developing environmentally friendly and ecological technologies and implementing them wherever possible is essential.

As a family-owned plastics processing company, we believe it is important to look beyond our business goals and take particular responsibility for future generations. There is currently no alternative to using non-recycled polymers in plastic injection moulding to produce our high-quality medical devices and laboratory products as our customers around the globe rely on the highest grades of purity and safety certifications to ensure optimal patient care and compliance with the stringent requirements for laboratory work. In light of this, we aspire to live, promote and consistently expand sustainability.

Commitment to sustainability and environmental protection

SARSTEDT is committed to ecological sustainability and environmental protection for present and future generations. Our goal is to ensure carbon neutrality with regard to combustion and vehicle fuels, as well as externally sourced energy. With the certification of our company according to the internationally recognized ISO 14001 standard, we anchor sustainability and environmental protection in the operational processes of our organisation. To ensure that the environmental aspects are fully taken into account, our environmental management system is also integrated into the EN ISO 13485 quality management system.

We are certified

Carbon neutrality

Our sites in Oberberg, Hemer and Rheinbach are managed according to a recognised operational environmental management system in line with the ISO 14001 certification. Sustainability no longer affects just the products, but also the way in which they are produced. That is why we act in an environmentally conscious manner along our entire value chain. From our product development, through to resource-saving production processes using environmentally friendly materials and environmentally friendly logistics.

An effective environmental management system results in:

  • Reducing emissions, waste and wastewater
  • Reducing costs through the targeted use of resources
  • Reducing negative environmental impacts
  • Improving legal security through compliance with environmental standards
  • Identifying sources of error with regard to environmental management at an early stage
  • Encouraging environmentally conscious conduct by staff
  • Improving the perception of the company among customers, partners and the public

We rely on renewable energy

Renewable energy

We intend to use renewable energy to expand the power supply from the company’s own power sources.

In the future, all structurally suitable roofs of our production halls will be fitted with photovoltaic systems. The installation of the first system on the roof of Production Hall VI was completed at the end of 2022. The system produces approx. 725,000 kWh of electricity a year. This power could supply around 160 households a year.

Over the course of 2022, our production site in Mawson Lakes, Adelaide, was also fitted with photovoltaic systems, and the same is true for our new distribution centre in Elsenroth in 2023.

The goal of our sustainability strategy is to progressively expand the use of renewable energy.

CO2-Reduktion

CO2-Reduktion

One of our primary goals is total carbon neutrality with regard to the use of combustion and vehicle fuels as well as electricity. We already obtain carbon-neutral green energy in all our sites in Germany. We are thus continuing to implement the expansion of our green energy supply to all sites around the globe.

To achieve climate neutrality for our company, we are also developing our own regional climate protection projects in addition to supporting existing initiatives.

We act sustainably

CO2-Neutralität

As part of our product development process, we are placing particular focus on sustainable materials management. With our revolutionary boxing and refilling concept for pipette tips, we are offering an innovative solution for sustainable laboratory work.

Pipetting is the central element in every laboratory. The further developed SARSTEDT pipette tip box is a universal and robust solution at the heart of our new pipette tip system. Various refilling options offer users a high degree of flexibility while simultaneously conserving resources.

The StackPack is the optimal solution for high tip throughputs. You can transfer individual trays to the box with one hand. Thanks to the compact and stable design, you can also process the tips directly from the StackPack.

With the SingleRefill, you can now also refill filter tips easily and using fewer resources. The closed design protects the pipette tips from contamination and thus enables hygienic and ecological refilling.

These two refilling options require up to 70% less storage space and up to 64% less material.

Energy efficient - Our box system combines particularly high stability with minimal material costs. The sophisticated design uses less plastic and thus also less energy in production.

Compact - In the StackPack, 480 tips need as much space as 192 tips in 2 boxes. This saves storage space as well as optimises logistics and thus also fuel consumption during transport.

Resource saving - For the production of the StackPack with its ideal packaging, up to 64% less material is required when compared to the box. This conserves resources, minimising plastic consumption.

Waste reducing - After use, the individual components of the box system can fit into each other. This saves disposal volume, reducing waste generation.

We recycle

Wir recyceln

As a plastics processing company, recycling is a key topic for us. Even if there is still no alternative to using virgin plastic in many areas of the medical and laboratory sectors, we rely on recycling products and materials wherever possible.

This can be seen in, for example, inline recycling systems in production. We place granulators right next to injection moulding machines in order to granulate any leftover material from processing (sprues) in an efficient manner. This allows the granulated material produced to be redirected back into the production process immediately. In this way, we have created the smallest possible closed recycling loop.

We also check for opportunities to use recycled material as early as product development and in our existing product range.

You, too, as a user can contribute to conserving resources and the environment by ensuring you are working in a sustainable manner. With the Refill Revolution – our pipette tip boxing system – we offer you the opportunity to recycle 100% of the boxes, trays and lids which you no longer need as part of our “WHAT’S NEXT” recycling concept. All components are made from recyclable polypropylene and can be used to produce new products. Our block racks, which have been successful on the market for many years, will also be made exclusively from recycled material in future.

We initiate environmental projects

CO2-Neutralität

We are involved in two regional environmental projects:
SARSTEDT Forest and SARSTEDT Nature Reserve.

As a locally rooted family-owned company, we believe it is important for us to be involved in regional environmental projects and thus make a sustainable contribution towards nature conservation in our home.

SARSTEDT Forest
In collaboration with Bündnis Zukunftswald e.V., Forstbetriebsgemeinschaft Nümbrecht and Holzkontor Rhein-Berg-Siegerland GmbH, we contributed €20,000 to the reforestation of an area of forest which was destroyed by bark beetles. The reforesting of approximately 8,000 m2 was completed in Nümbrecht in mid-December 2022. The planting plan, designed to facilitate the development of a mixed forest, is suitable for the location and thus optimally suited to the regional environment.

We are also supporting Forstbetriebsgemeinschaft Nümbrecht with a contribution of €30,000 and thus the goal of reforesting further local forests.

SARSTEDT Nature Conservation
This project began on 11 November 2022 in collaboration with Biologische Station Oberberg e.V., whereby we provided support in the form of a contribution of €8,500.

The goal is to develop a structurally rich biotope which offers a valuable habitat for a wide variety of animals and plants. The nature conservation measures for this area include a meadow orchard with 30 fruit trees, an insect hotel, a wildlife food plot, reduced mowing and a field margin for insects. Our trainees also actively assisted with the planting of fruit trees.

Biologische Station Oberberg e.V. will assume responsibility for maintaining the area in future and thus ensure its conservation in the long term.
Nature conservation
With these two projects, we are promoting regional nature conservation and thereby making our contribution to an intact ecosystem. With our environmental policy, we are supporting the flora and fauna of our home.
